Rábida Monastery

Where is it?:

The Monastery of La Rábida is located in the city of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva – Spain).

Description:

– It is a small Franciscan monastery located in Palos de la Frontera, (Huelva – Spain), on the top of a hill next to the joint of the Tinto and Odiel rivers. It was built in the 15th century and consists of a Gothic-Mudejar church, a cloister and a museum housing numerous memorials of the Discovery of America.
– It is the burial place of Martí­n Alonso Pinzón and Gonzalo de Sandóval (Conqueror of Nueva España), under the image of Nuestra Señora de los Milagros, where prayed the sailors of the first journey of discover of America.
– In the surrounding area there are several monuments and memorial facilities of the Discovery, such as the Caravels Pier where you can observe and visit a scale reproduction of the two caravels and the discovering nao of the New World, and the Column of the Discovery, built to commemorate the IV centenary.

Most relevant facts:

Cristopher Columbus, disappointed after the rejection of his project by the Portuguese king Juan II, found refuge and attention in La Rábida. Here, the Friars Juan Pérez and Antonio de Marchena listened to him and supported and recommended him to the Catholic Kings, who finally accepted the project of Columbus.
-Columbus met here Martín Alonso Pinzón, co-discoverer of America with his brother Vicente Yáñez.
-This is where Hernán Cortés, Gonzalo de Sandóval and Francisco de Pizarro passed after the conquest of New Spain against the Aztec Empire.
